영국여행 준비 - 기차여행

 

영국은 철도의 발상지다.  증기 기관을 발명한 제임스 왓트(James Watt) 도 증기 기관차를 개발한 죠지 스티튼슨(George Stepnenson) 도 브리티쉬 다.  상업적인 철로가 처음 깔린 곳도 영국이다.

 

이번 여행을 위해 영국철도 패스 1등급 1개월 연속 패스를 구입했다.  Senior 할인이 있어 그렇게 비싸지도 않다.  

 

2년전 유레일 1등 패스로 북유럽을 여행한 경험으로 비추어 볼 때 1등패스는 충분히 가치가 있다.   예약을 하지 않아도 자리를 찾지 못하는일이 없었다.  비지니스 클래스 칸을 우리 부부 둘만이 차지하고 앉아서 여행한 일도 한 두번 있었다.

 

단 한번 스웨덴 Upsala 에서 Stockholm 가는 열차를 탔을 때만 자리가 꽉 차서 당황했는데 그 때엔 그 열차가 검표를 하지 않는 Arlanda  공항역만이 남은 것을 안 2등 승객이 1등칸에 들어 온 것 같았을 때 뿐이었다.  2 등칸은 만원이었다.   그래도 따로 따로 자리 하나씩이 버어 있어 앉아 올 순 있었다.

 

1등칸이 있는 열차에 아무때나 올라 타면 된다.    그러나 영국은 그 실정이 어떤가 몰라 인터넷을 검색해 보니 영국도 역시  1등칸은 늘 자리가 있는 것 같다.     한 포럼에 올라 온 글엔 아래와 갈은 경험담이 적혀 있었다.

 

1등패스는 전날 6시나 7시까지 무료로 예약을 받아 주는데 - 수백번 영국 열차 여행을 해 봤지만 1등칸에 빈자리가 없는 경우는 한 번도 없었다!   ( Reservations can often be made free in first class up until 6 or 7pm the day before - but i've been on hundreds of trains in UK in first class and have never not found an empty seat!  ) 라고 말하고 있었다. 

 

그렇다면 안심이다.  

 

1개월간 1st Class Britrail Pass 로 이런 열차만 타고 차창관광만 해도 재미 있겠다.

 

영국 열차는 로선과 시간에 따라 아침과 3코스 석식을 무료로 제공하는 서비스를 하는 경우도 있다고 한다.

 

또 와인 한잔이 무료로 서비스하는 열차도 있다고 한다.

 

우리도 덴마크의 열차 1등 칸에서 승무원이 과일과 간식거리가 든 바구니와 음료수를 가지고 다니면서 서빙한는 것을 받아 본 경험이 있다. 물론 술은 없었지만.

 

또 어떤 역에서는 열차를 기다릴 때 일등석 라운지에서 다과와 음료들 들면서 기다린 적이 있었다.

 

런던과 그 주변의 정보는 충분히 공부했으니까 7월 22일에서 7월 29일까지 지낼 Scotland 의 Glasgow 에서 지낼 1주를 연구하면 된다.

 

처음에 자전거를 가지고 갈 요량으로 움직이지 않아도 될 Glasgow Central Station에 붙어 있는 호텔을 잡았는데 검토해 보니 스캇랜드 중북부 지방으로 떠나는열차는 이 중앙역에 아니라 거기에서 6백 미터 남짓 떨어진 Queen street Station 에서 모두 떠나는 것으로 되어 있다.

 

 

 

Glasgow 기차역은 Central 과 Queen Street 두개의 역으라 갈라 있다.

Central 은 주로 남쪽으로 떠나는 열차를 출발시키고

Queen Street 역은 북부 스캇랜드로 떠나는 열차를 발차시킨다.

Glasgow 의 두 역사이의 거리는 0.4 마일 (640 미터)

걸어 다닐 만한 거리다.

 

 

Scotrail 에서는 가장 좋은 기차여행은 Jacobite 증기열차라고 한다.  Fort William 에서 Mallaig 까지 왕복 80 마일인데 절경이라고 한다.    단지 이 구간은 Britrail Pass 가 통용되지 않는다고 한다.     Glasgow 에 머므는 동안에 가 보고 싶긴 한데  Day Trip 하기엔 연결 열차편이 마땅하지 않다.    Jacobite 열차편은 오전 것은 10시 15분 떠니고 돌아 오는 편은 Fort William 도착이 4시 29분 이다.

 

뿐만아니라 한달 가까이 전인데도 예약이 full 이라고 한다.

 

2년전에 Norway in a Nutshell 관광과 비슷하겠다.

그날 가서 운이 좋으면 자리가 있다고도 한다.  Fort William 까지도 경치가 좋다고 하니 그냥 가 보고 가서 운이 좋은면 Mallaig 행 관광 열차도 타 보는 거다.
