Are you going to Scarborough Fair?

 

오늘은 비.

 

비 오는 날엔 실내 자전거를 타고 실내 자전거를 탈 때는 타면서 가요114 에 연결하이 팝송을 듣는다.

 

자전거를 다 타고 컴퓨터를 끄려고 화면앞에 않으니 Sarah Brightman 이 부르는  Simon N Garfunkel 의 <Scarborough Fair> 가 들린다.  그리고 누군가 올린 가사도 화면에 떠 있다.

 

이 유명한 곡은 그렇게 무수히 들으면서 가사엔 크게 신경을 쓰지 않았다.  그런데 화면에 뜬 가사를 보니 뭔가 좀 황당하면서도 운률(Rhyme)이 잘 맞는 것이 참 Simon Garfunkel 답다고 생각했다.    Sound of Silence 같은 느낌을 주는 가사였다.  그래서 그 lyrics 에 대해 알아 봤다.

 

내 생각이 맞았다.    뭔가 Nursury Rhyme 같다 했는데 영국의 전통 발라드란다.   많이 바뀌기는 했지만 15세기까지 추적할 수 있는 오래된 영국의 민요였다.   Garfunkel 이 1965년 이 발라드에 대해 처음 듣고 곡을 붙여  영화 <Graduate>에도 삽입했다 한다.

와 갈이 운율을 맞췄다.

 

 

이음새도 없고 바느질 자국도 없는 셧츠를 만들어라

비도 안오고 샘도 솓지 않는 마른 우물에서 빨래를 해봐라든가

바닷물과 모래톱사이에서 한 에이커의 땅을 찾아 봐 등

수수꺼끼 같은 황당한 불가능사를 시키면서
