필요하다면 북한 미사일 기지를 쳐라 그리고 부숴라  - If Necessary, Strike and Destroy

 

이번에 오바마 대통령이 지명한 미국의 국방장관 후보자가 2006 년에 워싱통 포스트지에  William J Perry 와 함께 기고한 컬럼의 제명이다.

 

소름끼치는 대목은

 

We should not conceal our determination to strike the Taepodong if North Korea refuses to drain the fuel out and take it back to the warehouse. When they learn of it, our South Korean allies will surely not support this ultimatum -- indeed they will vigorously oppose it.

북한이 대포동 미사일을 발사대에서 제거하지 않는다면 우리가 쳐서 부숼 것이란 결심을 감춰서는 안된다.  남한이 이 계확을 안다면 이 최후 통첩을 지지하지 않을 것이다.  아니 격렬하게 반대할 것이다. ....

 

그리고 무시무시한 언급은

 

An invasion of South Korea would bring about the certain end of Kim Jong Il's regime within a few bloody weeks of war, as surely he knows. Though war is unlikely, it would be prudent for the United States to enhance deterrence by introducing U.S. air and naval forces into the region at the same time it made its threat to strike the Taepodong. If North Korea opted for such a suicidal course, these extra forces would make its defeat swifter and less costly in lives -- American, South Korean and North Korean.

북한의 남한 침공은 몇주간의 처절한 전쟁끝에 김정일 정권의 멸망을 가져올 것이란 것을 김정일은 알 것이다.   따라서 전쟁은 일어나지 않을 것이지만 만약을 대비하여 미공군과 해군을 한반도에 투입하여 대포동 미사일 기지를 공격할 때 북한의 자폭적인 남한 공격을 감행해 오는 경우에 대비하여야 할 것이다.    미군의 한 반도 투입은 이런 자살적 공격에서 미군과 남한 국민과 북한 주민의 희생을 최소화할 것이다.  .....

Willam Perry 는 Clinton 행정부에서 국방장관을 지냈고 그 당시에도 북한의 핵시설의 선제 공격을 감행하려 했던 사람이다.     김영삼대통령의 격렬한 반대에 부딛혀 실행까지엔 옮기지 못했지만 ...

 

이 것이 미국이 한국민을 생각하는 수준이다.

 

디시금 나를 울렸던 국사책 생각이 간절히 나는 대목이다.
